Course Description

This program offers individuals and professional investors a comprehensive understanding of investment strategies and capital markets. Participants will learn to measure risk, assess volatility, run regression analyses, define the yield curve, and use forecasting tools. The curriculum covers the introduction to capital markets and major asset classes, risk and investing, active management, and market risk premium. Additionally, the program offers hands-on tools and activities that bridge theoretical and practical knowledge, such as the Hedge Fund Case Study and Measurement Tools that allow participants to examine different approaches for measuring investment performance. Participants will also learn how to use online resources such as Yahoo Finance, Finviz, MacroHistory, and FRED to create and implement investment strategies. By the end of the program, participants will have the knowledge and tools to make more informed investment decisions.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this program, participants will have a strong foundation in investment strategies and a comprehensive understanding of capital markets. They will gain knowledge on major investable asset classes, risk management, and analytical theory, allowing them to make educated stock selections and avoid common investment pitfalls. Additionally, participants will learn how to analyze the performance of investment products, understand bond markets and yield, and recognize the tools and limits of forecasting. With this newfound knowledge, individual and professional investors will be better equipped to inform their market opinions, and leverage and short investment opportunities with confidence.

Harry Mamaysky
Professor of Professional Practice, Director of the Program for Financial Studies, Columbia Business School

Harry Mamaysky teaches capital markets and asset pricing to MBA, Masters, and PhD students as well as Executive Education courses on investment strategy, the use of text data in finance, and corporate bonds. His research focuses on equity, exchange rate, volatility, and credit markets, market microstructure, and the role of information in the trading process. He has consulted for a quantitative investment firm and for a nationally recognized statistical rating organization. Prior to his return to academia, he founded the Systemic Risk Group at Citigroup and served as a member of the firm’s Risk Executive Committee. He was a senior portfolio manager at Citi Principal Strategies with a focus on relative value credit trading. He has also held positions at Old Lane, Morgan Stanley, and Citicorp. Harry earned his PhD in finance from MIT and hold BS and MS degrees in computer science from Brown University. He joined Columbia Business School in 2015.
